棕榈栽培是一种可持续生计,人们利用棕榈的价值来构建自己的生活方式。亚洲棕榈树(Borassus flabellifer)富含重要的生物大分子,尤其是花叶苷(flabelliferins)和硼砂苷(borassosides),因此可提供大量营养和保健产品。花叶苷存在于棕榈果实、块茎和花序中,硼砂苷存在于花序中。目前已提取出14种花叶苷(其中只有9种结构已知)和6种硼砂苷。花叶苷F-II可减少肠道对葡萄糖的吸收,具有抗糖尿病和抗厌食症的作用。花叶苷FB具有抗菌作用,是SARS-CoV主蛋白酶、SARS-CoV主蛋白酶和人体细胞跨膜丝氨酸蛋白酶的抑制剂,而硼砂苷 E 则具有抗真菌作用。其他花叶苷和硼砂苷的结构和功能还有待进一步研究。
